Biography: 

Born in 1967, has been caving since 1983. He started surveying caves of the Swabian Jura and explored deep vertical caves in the Bavarian Alps. In 1985 Rainer started with cave diving. He is delegate for cave diving of the German Speleological Federation (VdHK) and participated on major cave diving projects like the exploration of the Wulfbachquellhöhle, Wimsener Höhle or the exceptional Blauhöhlensystem, some of the longest caves in Germany. He has been caving in many areas of Europe, Cuba, South America, Asia and participated in several expeditions to Lechuguilla Cave. 

His speleological scope is focused on exploring new caves, documentation of unique speleothems and photographing. Rainer published several pictures in calendars, articles and books about his explorations. Because of the mostly difficult conditions of exploration trips, he prefers using light and compact high-quality photo equipment. Cave photography is teamwork and takes a lot of time and patience from models and helpers in the harsh, cold and wet conditions of the underground. Mostly he is supported by his wife Conny. Rainer participated 2013 and 2015 in International Meetings of Cave Photographers (ICPM). Beside cave exploration and photographing, Rainer & Conny Straub enjoying travelling and back-packing in remote areas, especially in Karstic mountain areas around the globe. Rainer works in international Sales and live near Stuttgart.
